Did you know Zen principles can be applied in business?

Zen Peacemakers develop new social enterprise structures that are self-sustaining, holistic and address important individual and community needs. Bernie has effectively applied ancient Zen teachings in corporate America to advance a moral, sustainable and profitable business model.

Bernie, a Zen teacher, author and successful entrepreneur, has proven that Zen teachings and socially responsible practices can help businesses be prosperous and conscientious. He calls it the double bottom line: generating profits and serving the community.

Every executive knows a business must support itself to survive. Bernie maintains that businesses must also support employees and the communities they serve. Working with the Social Venture Network (LINK) and various American businesses, he developed a socially responsible business model that recruits and trains disadvantaged workers, provides childcare and community services; and advances the principles of empowerment, empathy, and responsible action.

Responsible Results: Greyston Bakery and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream

The Greyston Bakery epitomizes Roshi Bernie's socially responsible business model. Founded in 1982, the bakery began with a few Zen students and a vision that Greyston would be a Mandala, the Sanskrit word for "circle," which suggests the unity and interdependence of life. The goal was to create a business that would holistically address all aspects of human life and improvement.

Bernie instituted hiring policies to advance opportunities for people that conventional businesses had deemed "unemployable." Greyston trains workers whom society had rejected - people who were overcoming criminal histories, drug problems, poverty, and other struggles. The company collaborates with a sister foundation that provides daycare and housing assistance to employees and members of the surrounding community.

Since its humble founding, the bakery grew into a successful $6 million business with more than 75 employees. (Note: the Greyston Mandala consisting of various organizations employs the larger number of over 175) Five-star restaurants across New York City carry their desserts, cakes and cookies. This visionary and profitable business model has received major critical acclaim. The Wall Street Journal lauded how Roshi Bernie’s "profitable enterprise" is also "housing the poor, counseling their teenage children and providing daycare for their toddlers." Newsday described the bakery as a "sweet success" where "the formerly hard-core unemployed turn their lives around." And the U.S. News and World Report awarded Bernie a "Best of America Award for Social Action" in 1991.

Bernie emphasizes that Greyston’s approach should not be considered unique or extraordinary. Most businesses can succeed by pursuing a double bottom line and incorporating Zen teachings and social responsibility into their core mission.
